Winchester Model 1873 rifle manufactured in 1880. The rifle has a blued barrel, magazine and receiver with color case-hardened forearm cap, hammer, loading lever and steel shotgun buttplate. The shotgun butt stock and forearm are straight grain black walnut. This Third Model rifle has an integral, machined, dust cover guide rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The rifle has a round barrel with full-length magazine. The barrel is fitted with the standard dove-tail mounted front sight with nickel-silver blade and sporting style rear sight. The special order stock has a steel 'shotgun' style buttplate. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1865. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "38-CAL." is located on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The bottom of the brass cartridge elevator has the script marking: "38 Cal.". The top of the upper receiver tang is roll-stamped "-MODEL 1873-" in fancy letters with foliate designs at either end. The script style serial number: "97426 A" is located on the lower receiver tang behind the lever.

Stock: walnut
Gauge: 38-40
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 97426A
Condition: Very fine. The rifle retains 90% plus of the original high polish blue finish. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the barrel and magazine. The receiver and side plates have some light edge wear and minor handling marks but retains at least 90% of the original blue finish. The case-hardened finish on the hammer and loading lever has faded to a dark patina with strong traces of the original case colors. The case hardened finish on the forearm cap and buttplate shows moderate wear and has a blue-gray patina. The revarnished stock and forearm are both otherwise in fine overall condition with some scattered and generally minor handling marks. All of the markings are crisp. This is a very fine example of a Winchester Model 1873 Rifle with special order shotgun butt stock and buttplate.
