5-1/2" across, the flecked dark greenish black Bi was made in the North from scarce nephritic Jade raw material not generally found elsewhere. The conical central hole is drilled from both sides and the Jade has a nice sound when struck. Acquired many years ago in Xian, the burial area must have been quite dry (common) and/or the casket was very tight, since there is little patina to the surfaces. Or did someone clean it rather aggressively in the modern era (unlikely due to its soft, ancient and original looking "tone" or lustre)? A lovely example that dates to the 2nd or 1st millenium BC. The Bi was the most important ancient ritual Jade that apparently evolved from the original idea of being a sun-worshipping object.
