Solid silver mounted small sword circa late 18th century, 38” overall with 31-5/8” blade. This sword is attributed to having been owned by the third governor of Ohio, Samuel Huntington (1765-1870). Refer: John S. DuMont collection, Lot 99. The sword shows a three-sided colichemard-style blade and the general style and workmanship of the silver most likely American. Also, there is an absence of silver-maker’s hallmarks and certain aspects of the guard and pommel are very early American looking. The blade appears European. The top throat of the scabbard is inscribed in period script letters “Major S. Huntington” and surmounted by a nicely engraved early Federal-style eagle and the engraving is completely original to the period in our opinion. The sword retains its original blued steel hangar and chains which are in near fine condition. The overall condition is very good plus to near fine other than the blade which shows some moderate pitting and erosion, slight cleaning, normal aging, and is remaining in just good condition. The hilt and mounts have been polished several times in their life, but edges not broken. The grip is silver wire over a silver base, and the general quality of this sword is very high and would have been an expensive weapon in its day. A large research portfolio assembled by John S. DuMont is included, which includes genealogical and historical information. Est: $6,000 - $12,000
