The lot features a unique Squaw Camp Axe from the Sioux Native American Indians. The piece shows a faceted hammer poll (hammerpoll) forged axe head with solid wood haft having a carved grip area and adorned with brass tacks. The piece is in the design and shape like early war clubs and tomahawks, but due to its size was most likely a camp axe used by a squaw. It is possible that the brass tacked design was added to the piece later by a relative. The wood haft does shows fine artfully carved design with a tiered grip with pommel like ridged end. This would have been used by the Indian women for chopping wood, felling small trees and other duties around the camp, but could have been used as a personal defense weapon if needed. The head measures 7.5” L and the piece measures overall 16” in length. The piece is believe to date to the late 19th century to the 20th century.
