Shah Alam II, Gold Mohur, 10.71g, Dar-ul-Khilafat Shahjahanabad Mint, AH 123X/31, (1788/9 AD), a Royal umbrella as mint mark, and a Persian letter ‘Ain’, Sahib-i-Qiran type (Cf. Wright 2280, Hull 2249, cf. BMC 1094). Extremely Fine, Very Rare. The Ain may represent a Governor during that period and the coin could have been struck by a chieftain. This Mohur is similar to the rupee coins struck by the Maratha rulers called Satara Rajas and published as such in KM and the Wiggins Maheshwari catalogue (MW T-13, p.191). However, the present coin bears a Persian “A” on the reverse. One could possibly believe that the large “A” was added to denote the name Ali Jah, the Mahadaji Scindhia though this attribution is tenuous at best.
