Scarce and Desirable U.S. Navy Simeon North Model 1813 Flintlock Pistol

Estimate: $9500 - 16000
Manufactured by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut, circa 1813 to 1815 with total quantity approximately 1,626 (around 1,000 delivered to the U.S. Navy with the remainder delivered to the U.S. Army). The original contract called for 20,000 pistols but due to the large caliber and heavy recoil, the order was revised. This pistol was delivered to the Navy since it is fitted with a steel belt hook on the left side of the stock. The lock is marked "S. NORTH (in downward curve) over an American eagle motif with the letters "U" and "S" at either side over "MIDLn CON." (in upward curve). The left rear of the barrel is marked "P/US". The stock is flush with the front barrel band and has an iron tang/buttcap and a lock plate that is beveled at the front and slightly rounded at the rear, with the brass flash pan without fence, tilted upward to the rear. Complete with a wooden ramrod with swelled tip. As a limited production type, the Model 1813 is in strong demand by collectors. The pistol has historic importance as the first arms contract in which a gun maker agreed to provide a product with interchangeable parts.
