Manufactured circa 1848 to 1859 with an estimated production of somewhere between 5,800 and 6,700. The Model 1847 Musketoon was the primary shoulder arm of the U.S. Dragoon and Cavalry regiments on the western frontier between 1848 and 1861. This particular musketoon has had the swivel ram rod removed and has a brass headed European iron ram rod replacement. The barrel, lock, ramrod, and sling bar are iron with a "National Armory Bright" finish. The barrel bands, left side plate, trigger guard, buttplate and lower tang are brass. The lock plate is marked "SPRING/FIELD/1848" vertically behind the hammer and has the Springfield eagle and shield over "U.S." ahead of the hammer. The barrel tang is dated "1850" and the left side, rear of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/eagle head" proof and inspection marks. Blade front sight integral with the barrel band and Civil War Era three folding leaf rear sight. Mounted with a full walnut straight grip stock with saddle ring and bar mounted on the rear barrel band and rear of the side plate, visible cartouche on the left flat and "US" marked buttplate tang.

Condition: About good. The metal surfaces have a gray patina with minor pitting on the barrel, bolster and lock. The brass has an aged patina. The heavily weathered stock is fair with some scattered minor pressure dents and dings. The stud under the muzzle is absent. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
