One of approximately 30 of these Early Type revolvers were manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts in 1850-51. Revolver has a 6 1/4" barrel and an un-marked barrel catch which are features of the Early Type revolver. The revolver has a round blue barrel and six-shot cylinder, casehardened frame and hammer, brass trigger guard and walnut grips. The lock plate is marked "WESSON'S & LEAVITT'S PATENT", the top strap is marked "MASS. ARMS CO. / CHICOPEE FALLS", the bevel gear " WESSON'S PATENT AUG. 28, 1849" and the rear of the cylinder "LEAVITT'S PATENT APRIL 29, 1837". The serial number "16" is stamped on the face of the recoil shield and underside of top strap. The Wesson & Leavitt Dragoon revolver was a well made revolver that was one of Colt's first competitors. Samuel Colt successfully sued Massachusetts Arms for patent infringement in 1851. The injunction imposed as a result of the lawsuit led to abandonment of the Dragoon pattern and redesign of the Wesson & Leavitt revolvers.
