He developed a style influenced by the work of Henri Rousseau. In Palestine, he was one of the founders of the new Eretz Yisrael style, with a folk and naive appearance. His subjects were often the biblical landscape, folklore and people. He became quite popular, despite his opposition to the modern art schools of Jerusalem.
