Rare and Intriguing NSKK Style Dagger with Damascus Pattern Blade Gold Accented Huhnlein Inscription Scabbard and Hanger with Correspondence from Tom Johnson of Johnson Reference Books

Originally established as a sub-group of the Sturmabteilung, the Nationalsozialistisches Kraftfahr Korps (National Socialist Motor Corps) was the transport wing of the Nazi Party before their rise to power, using privately owned automobiles to serve as the logistical backbone of the SA. After the Party's ascension, the NSKK became the chief authority on vehicular maintenance and operation in Germany; every automobile driver, amateur or professional, answered to them. When the war commenced in full, the NSKK membership served as a prime recruiting ground for the drivers and mechanics that Blitzkrieg demanded. Measuring 13 5/8 inches overall, with a "rosebud" pattern Damascus stamped blade, 8 5/8 inches long, with raised, gold washed acorn and oak leaves flanking "Alles fur Deutschland" (Everything for Germany) on the obverse, and the reverse showing the raised Carl Julius Krebs (Solingen) makers mark near the guard, and a gold accented "Huhnlein" signature over the SA runic logo. Born in 1881, Korpsfuehrer Adolf Huehnlein was a decorated combat veteran of the First World War, having received the First and Second Class Iron Cross, participated in the Beer Hall Putsch, and after getting out of jail was part of the RZM before establishing the SA's automotive engineering division, which would become a nucleus of the NSKK. Later, he would serve as a member of the Reichstag for the Nazi Party, in addition to his roles as chief of German motor sports and commissioner for wartime motor transport. Following his death in 1942, he received the German Cross post-mortem. Fitted with an NSKK regulation hilt, with "Wm" on the nickel finished guard and proper SA rune and National Eagle badges in the wood. With a black enamel and nickel finished scabbard and a brown leather hanger with a small "SA" pin applied between the buckle and hook. Included with the lot is a letter from Tom Johnson, of Johnson Reference Books, which discusses this dagger and it's inclusion in the then-upcoming text "Collecting the Edged Weapons of The Third Reich, Volume VI".

Excellent, with a few minor handling marks on the hilt and some light flaking of the scabbard finish. The Damascus pattern is finely detailed, with over 50% of the original gold present on the crisp raised sections. Presentation daggers from the NSKK are very rare, and rarely come up at auction, especially in such high condition.
