Rare United States Navy Issued Colt Model 1851 Navy-Navy Hartford Address Percussion Revolver
Estimate: $8500 - 13000
This is an example of a Colt Model 1851 Navy-Navy contract percussion revolver. The serial number range of the Late Navy-Navies (89,000-91,000) falls in to the serial number range of the Early Fourth Model. The barrel has the one line Hartford address on the top flat, "COLTS/PATENT/U.S." marked on the left side of the frame, and a small letter "M" stamped on the left trigger guard shoulder. It has a three screw frame with a percussion cut-out without a capping groove. The grip straps are iron with "USN" stamped in large font on the butt. The cylinder has the navy scene and is marked "COLTS PATENT No. 89361". Mismatched wedge with remaining numbers matching. Fitted with a one piece grip stamped "I/GWR" for USN inspector Capt. George W. Rodgers (note that the letter "I" stands for inspector).
BBL: 7 1/2 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 36 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 89361
Condition: Very good plus. The revolver has traces of original blue with the balance a smooth dark patina showing limited pin point pitting. A trigger guard screw appears to be a replacement and the hammer has been repaired. Nearly all of the cylinder scene remains. The grip is very fine with a series of minor pressure dents on the bottom, a small chip missing near the bottom, and some very scattered minor handling marks overall. Mechanically fine. Few of these U.S.N. Colt Model 1851's in original percussion configuration are known to exist as nearly all were converted to cartridge in 1872.
