Rare Serial Number 4 Gwyn & Campbell Type I Breech-Loading Grapevine Carbine
Type I, "Union Carbine" manufactured by Edward Gwyn and Abner Campbell of Hamilton, Ohio, in 1863. The carbine has a part-round/part octagon barrel with the 900 yard, long base rear sight. The receiver has a lock plate screw on the right side in front of the hammer and is fitted with a lever latch with a trigger-like spur inside the bottom loop of the serpentine lever. The walnut stock has an iron, crescent, buttplate. The serial number, "4" is stamped on the underside of the barrel and the receiver. There are no other visible markings on the lock plate or the frame. Gwyn & Campbell manufactured 4,200 Type I "Union Carbines" under Ordnance Department contracts during 1863-64. These carbines were widely issued to Midwestern and Border State Federal cavalry regiments. This may be the lowest serial number Gwyn & Campbell Carbine extant.
