Rare Pauly system breech loading cartridge shotgun, signed "Picherau Brevete a Paris" in gold on barrels, approximately 20 gauge, 22-1/2" barrels, 39-1/2" overall, serial numbered 59 on inside of tang, with D over 22 marking. The action is exposed by a lever which is locked by a spring latch, which when released and tilted up exposes the action for loading proprietary Pauly cartridges. Pauly was a French inventor who is creditedwith the first successful cartridge arms, dating to the 1820s. The gun is in good to very good condition, showing a brown patina finish, 50%+ Damascus pattern on barrels, some minor edge wear, normal metal aging with beautifully gold inlaid barrel and gold inlays at breech. The stocks show a good burl wood grain with fairly sharp checkering, some minor dings, mars, scratches and minor imperfections but at least very good withabout half the varnish. The left rear of the butt stock shows stamped initials "H M J". The barrel length is somewhat short for this period, but it appears to be the genuine length as the sight position, muzzle and rib
