This is a rare example of a Winchester Model 1886 50-100-450 Express Rifle that was manufactured in 1903. The rifle is accompanied by a Winchester Museum letter that states: "Model 1886, serial number 126845 is listed as rifle, 45-100-450 (we assume it to be 50-100-450), octagon barrel, plain trigger, takedown, plain pistol grip. Shotgun rubber buttplate." The rifle has a blued barrel, magazine and receiver with color casehardened forearm cap, hammer and loading lever. The walnut forearm and pistol grip stock have an oil finish. The stock is fitted with a black, hard rubber pistol grip cap embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS" and checkered black hard rubber shotgun buttplate with the round Winchester logo in the center. The barrel has a dovetail mounted bead front sight and two leaf Winchester Express rear sight with platinum sighting line. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "-MANuFACTURED BY THE- / - WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.- " in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "50-100-450" is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886-" and the lower tang is stamped with the two-date patent markings and the serial number "126845". The powerful 50-100-450 Express Cartridge was not popular in the United States. Winchester Model 1886 Rifles chambered for this cartridge are rare.
