Manufactured circa 1862, only 709 rifles were made in this pattern and the entire production was purchased by the Navy. The top of the receiver is marked "SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO. BOSTON MASS/PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860" and the serial number is marked on the top rear of the receiver. Brass blade front and folding ladder rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The distinctive feature of this variation of Spencer Rifle is that the barrel is fitted with a large bayonet lug on the underside rear of the muzzle for a saber bayonet. The receiver and lever were casehardened, while the remaining surfaces are blue. Mounted with a full length forearm secured by three barrel bands with a steel end cap and sling swivel on the middle band, and straight grip stock with sling swivel and steel buttplate, These rifles represented the first Spencer of any type purchased by the U.S. Government.

Condition: Fine. The barrel has a dark patina with strong original blue finish in protected areas, and some minor pitting, (mainly at the breech end). The receiver has 30% original case colors with the balance a smooth dark and brown mottled patina. The lock has a dark patina with minor pitting and the hammer and lever have a smooth dark patina. The wood is fine with some scattered overall minor dents, dings and scratches associated with a firearm of this age, The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
