This is a primitive antique carved wooden dough bowl and spoon. In colonial America, dough bowls provided a snug, warm place in which bread could rise prior to baking. Wooden bowls have always been the preferred choice for bread-making because the heat generated by the yeast is retained in the wood, giving the dough an even rise—and because the bowl’s high sides protect the dough from drafts. Both the bowl and spoon have been carved from solid pieces of wood. The bowl shows an exceptionally large size with excellent craftsmanship. The spoon is also weel made and has darkened with use. There is one older repair to a spilt in the wood as shown. The bowl measures 15" wide and 24.5" long.
