Ouro Morabitino +SANCIVS EX RTVGALIS * MUITO RARA SOB-FDC
G.04.02; JS S1.4; 3,68g. +IHHEPTRIS I II LII SPSSCIA EXCELENTE ESTADO DE CONSERVAÇÃO Estimate: 25 000-30 000
To start minting gold coins for the newly created Portucalense Kingdom, our second king. D. Sancho I copied the prestigious Morabitino, first issued around 150 years previously by the Almoravid dynasty. This was successfully imitated, although the weight was reduced by some of the Taifas and kings of Castile and Leon. It was with this weight, presumably 3.82g. on average, corresponding to the inscription of 60 on the marking, which would have been ordered for its manufacture. With an appropriate design for a first coin, with the king expressing his desire for a new nation to become larger, for its fight with the infidel, on horseback, with chainmail and raised sword, but also placing himself in the hands of God in the inscription on the obverse and the message of the quinas, which were to become a permanent feature of Portuguese coins. Thus, issued for the prestige of the kingdom and for hoarding by the rich and powerful, it would have been struck in appreciable quantities, since nowadays, in the at least one hundred examples known, no two examples have been found from the same minting. As this was a coin that was not exchanged very much, few of the remaining examples show considerable wear. Indeed, the morabitino coin which forms part of the beautiful set offered here by Numisma is in an exceptional state of conservation, without any damage to tarnish the 800-year old brilliant shine, and you can still feel the scratch on the metal cut out by scissors and printed on a die carefully opened for stamping.
