Theatrically lit three-quarter length portrait of a woman in a black dress.

Maurice Codner was born in Stoke Newington 27 September 1888, son of William Squires Codner, an iron merchant, and his wife Ada Mary Payne. Educated at Stationers' Company School and Colchester School of Art. Exhibited at RA (45), RP (24), ROI, RI, NEAC, Paris Salon (honorary mention 1938, Silver Medal 1954) 1928-58 form London. Elected RP 1937, honorary secretary RP. Served in France with Royal North Devon Hussars during 1st World War. Painted portraits of King George VI, Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother. Died London 10 March 1958. Buried Dedham.
