Plumbogummite seems a very odd name for a mineral species, however, the name has real significance. Named in 1819 by Francois Pierre Nicolas Gillet de Laumont from the Latin "plumbum" for lead, and "gummi" for gum, in allusion to its lead content and appearance at times as drops or coatings of gum. Plumbogummite is a rare secondary lead phosphate mineral. This plumbogummite occurrence is unlike any seen before, the plumbogummite has overgrown and in some cases completely replaced crystals of an earlier lead chlorophosphate mineral called pyromorphite. In mineralogy, this replacement of an original mineral species (pyromorphite) by a second mineral species (plumbogummite) while preserving the crystal form and size of the original mineral is called pseudomorphism. Pseudomorphism is rare in the mineral kingdom and these plumbogummite pseudomorphs are some of the most colorful and aesthetic ever seen in nature. This specimen was recovered from near surface workings in 2014. Dimensions (cm): 4.2 H x 4.5 W x 3.4 D.
