Pawnee Pipe Tomahawk made by William Horstmann (Philadelphia, PA.) 7.5" head is expertly crafted, nickel plated & bears the Horstmann touch mark on the blade. The highly polished 16" haft features a unique, over-sized under-curl at the smoking tip. Circa 1880-1890.Pipe tomahawks attributed to known makers are rare. Horstmann created knives, swords, axe heads and other iron implements that were traded and sold to the Pawnee and Osage Indians in the late 19th century in KS and OK. All Horstmann-made pieces feature this same exact haft. An identical example can be seen at the Museum of the Fur Trade in Chadron, Nebraska; and in the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation which is pictured in Harold Peterson's book American Indian Tomahawks (1965), figure 231.
