Great example of a Pascaline Mechanical Calculator. Made for adding currency. There is a series of square openings along the top of the casing, under these openings are drums each numbered on a cylindrical surface. The labelacross with the French wording has been replaced. There are 8 wheels, which are marked with denominations from least significant on the right: Sols and Deniers. To enter a digit in the device, a stylus would be inserted between theappropriate wheel's spokes and the wheel was turned until it reached the stop at the bottom, like dialing a telephone. Each digit was entered in turn, and the sum would appear in the windows at top. Back openings to view the wheels. Approx.14.5" x 3.3/4" x 5.5". Comes in Rosewood case which shows some damaged areas and cracks. As of the typing of this catalog, research is still being done in order to more accurately date this instrument.
