Remarkable AQS on an off-white 8.5 x 7 sheet. Wilde pens a quote from his ‘The Garden of Eros.’ In full: “creamy meadow-sweet, Whiter than Juno's throat and odorous as all Arabia. Oscar Wilde, New York, May 8th, ‘82.” Matted and framed with a profile portrait and a printed caption of the quote, to an overall size of 17.5 x 11.5. Intersecting folds, two through single letters of signature, and mild toning to edges, otherwise fine condition.

‘The Garden of Eros,’ a poem in which the author laments the growth of materialism in the 19th century, was first published in the summer of 1881. The following spring, Wilde chose to pen this vivid line to accompany his signature. The poem is memorable for its references to Keats, Shelley, and other poets and artists who were his contemporaries, as well as such key historical figures as Milton and Dante, and reflections on his travels to Italy and Greece.
