Original oil painting on canvas signed lower left J. Walker dated 1883. The painting measures approximately 10 ¼ ” x 15” and shows Calvary soldiers in uniform with sabers and their horses tethered in background. Thepainting shows some minor cracking and slight normal aging with small flecks of paint missing but in good original condition for its age and needs slight conservation and minor cleaning. The painting is containedwithin an old antique frame which may be of the period. James Walker was well-known for his battle scenes and worked as an interpreter in the U.S. Army for General Winfield Scott. He became highly respectedfor providing the capital in Washington with a large painting of the battle of Chapultepec which is housed at the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma. After the Civil War he established his studios in New York andWashington and became well-known as a painter of famous American battle scenes.
