(MGM, 1939) This fantastic original matte painting features a stark Kansas farm road rendered in white charcoal on black illustration board with production information marked at the center of the image, “Fleming Ext. Farm” and “Stand 2, Hole 46.” Importantly, this is the first scene of the film, and it finds a breathless Dorothy bending down to question Toto ("Did she hurt you? She tried to, didn't she?"), establishing both Dorothy’s colorless and hopeless Kansas and her fear of Miss Gulch, who later morphs into the Wicked Witch of the West.
