by Baje Whitethorne depicting a Native desert home. Signed lower right. Image measures 10 3/4"x14 1/4" in double mat with wood frame. Baje Whitethorn was born and raised on the Navajo Reservation in northeast Arizona. He inherited his artistic talent from his mother an expert rug weaver. Whitethorn began sketching horses at the age of five. He took art classes at the government boarding school and at Grand Canyon College in Phoenix but he did not pursue a career in art until later. In 1986 Whitethorn, working in a position testing nuclear reactors, rejected an offer to relocate to Argentina and began pursuing a career in art full-time. He began selling landscapes for $75 at local craft shows. His prices quickly increased as his popularity grew. Whitethorn began illustrating children's books in 1990 with "Sunpainters: Eclipse of the Navajo Sun." He has also illustrated a variety of Navajo legends. In 1998 he was named, "Outstanding Contributor to Children's Literature" by the Arizona Library Association. In 2002 Whitethorn was chosen to be the Indian Market poster artist.
