The lot features an authentic original beaded and tacked leather belt from the Nez Perce Native American Indians and dating to circa 1880-1890. The belt shows a saddle harness leather heavy construction with an excellent traditional geometric beaded design and artful brass covered iron trade tack accents. The beadwork shows all early glass trade seed beads with a chalk white border and framing and three geometric patterned sections showing padre sky blue, corn yellow, semi-transparent dark blue and medium/dark green. The belt shows an unusual and rare wide construction and is truly a very early and historic example. The belt also shows a cast iron square period buckle and overall good condition for its age. The belt has various missing tacks and a few strands of missing beads, but overall it is truly an excellent artful example. Provenance: From a large and historic Old Western Cowboy and Native American Indian private collection in Bozeman, Montana. The piece shows both trade thread and sinew sewn construction, a representation of its true authentic age. The belt is one of only a few large wide Nez Perce belts brought to public sale and is similar to the belt offered by High Noon and Manitou Galleries at their August in Santa Fe Art and Artifact Auction 8/12/2004 that sold for $2,232.50 (with premiums). Measures overall 38.5"L 3 3/8"W.
