These brass coins were used in Anne Arundel County, soon after the Civil War until the late 30's, as payment to pickers. Farmers sent their wagons to Southeast Baltimore, Md. to pick up workers, usually of Polish extraction, to work on the farm as pickers: cherries, berries, or beans (whatever was in season). Each coin has a number on it representing the number of barrels picked - either by the day, or week. At the end of the season the pickers could take the coins into town to be used as money. The merchants would then return the coins to the farmer, identified by the initials inscribed on the coin. These particular coins are inscribed J.H.G., standing for John H. Gischel, who farmed the east side of Richie Hwy near the DMV in Glen Burnie. These three coins have been made into an attractive pair of earrings and a bow pin. Each coin here is the size of nickel. More information is included with purchase.
