Militia Infantry Officer's Sword, ca. 1840-1860, 31'' blade, 36-1/2'' overall, with reeded bone/ivory handle, distinctive militia helmet pommel and down-turned counterguard, with double edged blade and near full-length fuller. Crossed quillions are connected by a heavy link chain. Blade is etched with floral designs, and patriotic symbols such as eagles, Stand of Arms, and U.S. shield. Pommel is cast to resemble a helmet with barred visor and large plume. Counterguard is decorated with a relatively high relief eagle on a stylized sunburst. Scabbard for this particular piece is now missing but was undoubtedly silver-plated brass with little ornamentation. Condition is about fine. Etched design on blade is mostly visible with light even wear and moderate carbon staining. Grip shows light general wear with one lengthwise fracture along ribbed area, which is barely visible and detracts little. Brass furnishings show light wear. A fine example of a pre-Civil War mil!
itia sword, many of which were owned by later commissioned Civil War officers. Est.: $750-$1,000.
