THE MEET AT MELTON: Antique foxhunt sporting print in rare elephant folio size based on a famous painting by Sir Francis Grant, 1841, engraved by W. Humphrys. (haze from glass makes photos fuzzy and less colorful).... Text reads: [To his Grace the Duke of Wellington, KG/This engraving from the Original Picture in his Possession/Is with permission most respectfully dedicated by his much obliged and Obedient Servant/London published Nov. 1, 1841 by Messrs. H. Graves & Co. Printsellers to Her Majesty and HRH Prince Albert]..... Sporting scene size is 28.5 x 17 inches plus 2.5 inches text. Matted and framed, overall size 37 x 26.5 in. This foxhunt sporting print presents an artistically challenging composition depicting 37 people with throngs of horses and dogs. Francis Grant, 1803-78, was self-taught but became a fashionable portrait painter to high society, including the Queen. He became President of the Royal Academy in 1866 and was knighted soon afterwards. Melton was a favorite sporting resort for royalty and high society, the scene of several of Grant's paintings. This print is an old re-strike, ca. 1890, but is rare today.
