This Model 1873 rifle has fixed blade and notch rear sights with a Vernier tang peep sight. The right side of the receiver is marked "MANUFACTURED BY / MASS. ARMS CO / CHICOPEE FALLS" and the left side is marked "EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE / MAY 27, 1851 / DEC 6, 1859" followed by "1873". The lower tang is marked with the serial number. The rifle has a half octagon barrel with no provisions for a forearm. The nicely figured select walnut straight grip stock is checkered as well as the pistol grip mounted on the lever. The stock is fitted with a nickel plated Swiss type buttplate. Model 1873 Maynard rifles used a cartridge with a very thick rim which could be used to extract them from the barrel. An example of a "thick head Maynard" dummy cartridge is included in this lot.
