Marlin Ballard No. 4 Perfection Single Shot Rifle

Manufactured circa 1876 to 1891. The rifle is without caliber markings but is likely chambered for the 38-50 Everlasting cartridge. Equipped with an adjustable front sight (without sight insert and retainer and adjusting knob is broken), elevation adjustable rear sight and tang mid-range peep sight. The left side of the action has the two-line marking address and Ballard 1861 patent marking, "J.M. MARLIN, NEW-HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A./BALLARD'S. PATENT. NOV. 5. 1861". The barrel is a No. 2 and is numbered to the gun (the serial number is under the forearm) and the lever is ring shaped. The smooth forearm has a horn insert and the smooth straight grip stock has a replacement nickel plated Swiss style buttplate.

Fine. The barrel retains 70% original blue finish thinning to a brown. The receiver retains traces of original case colors, otherwise faded to a silver gray. The wood is fine with hairline cracks on the buttstock near the receiver (left and right sides) and a few minor handling marks with finish loss and dark oil staining. Mechanically fine.
