<B>Mark David Chapman Signs the Book that Caused Him to Shoot John Lennon of the Beatles.</B></I> A signed paperback copy of <I>Catcher In the Rye</B></I> (New York: Bantam Books, February, 1981). On December 8, 1980, John Lennon was shot down by Mark David Chapman outside Lennon's apartment. Chapman, after reading the book <I>Catcher in the Rye,</B></I> wanted to emulate the fictitious character of Holden Caulfield and, after stalking Lennon all day, shot him four times. Chapman had a copy of the book with him when he shot Lennon. The present copy was obtained from a Rikers Island prison guard who obtained it from Chapman during his first year of incarceration. Condition is just that of a worn reading copy.
