Magnificent Rare WWII Nazi G33/40 Experimental Folding Stock Mountain/Paratrooper Carbine with Bay
This is an exceptional example of a WWII G33/40 Prototype "Folding Stock" carbine. Several of the current K98 reference books show some line drawings of these prototype folding stock/hinge mechanisms with only a single photograph. These G33/40 folding stock carbines were a late war development that was intended primarily for paratrooper and mountain troops to allow easy storage and carrying while in route to the battle field. The folding or hinge mechanism is very unique and attaches directly behind the rear of the receiver, with the locking mechanism on the right side with the hinge on the left side, thus allowing the butt stock to fold to the left side of the carbine, away from the bolt handle side. The actual mechanism is a massive all machined steel hinge with an internal locking mechanism, leaving the sides of the hinge area very smooth with no sharp protruding mechanisms. The hinge assembly has a single large locking screw on the right side and when you turn the screw a quarter turn and push it inward, it unlocks the hinge, allowing the stock to hinge to the left. To extend the stock to its normal length you just reverse procedure and turn the screw a quarter turn back to its original position to relock it again. Simple, easy and very robust, excellent Teutonic design and workmanship. The actual G33/40 carbine in this case is a late war version that is marked on top of the receiver ring, with "7,88/dot/1942" for the bore diameter, wartime code for the Czech factory at Brno and the year of manufacture. The forward portion of the trigger guard is marked "GERMANY". The right side of the small receiver ring has two small "eagle/ 63" proofs, with a single WaA63 Waffenamt in-between. The left side has the serial number (9367) with a single eagle firing proof. The carbine has the standard G33/40 light weight barrel and the rear of the barrel is marked with three "eagle/ 63" proofs along with the serial number (9367). The carbine has the correct style G33/40 rear sight, with the short base that is graduated from 100-1000 meters with the inverted "v" front sight both mounted on the correct short light weight barrel. The bolt is the correct G33/40 light weight version that has the double gas hole on the underside with the hollowed out bolt handle, with a single eagle firing proof on top of the bolt handle with a single "eagle/ 63" proof and "N5" markings on the underside. The walnut stock is the correct G33/40 version with the folding mechanism as noted above along with the cupped buttplate and the sheet metal protector on the left side of the stock. The right side of the stock has a single "eagle/ 63" proof over two "eagle/ WaA 63" proofs, with a single smaller "eagle/ WaA 63/dot" proof on the underside of the stock. The carbine is complete with the front sight cover, leather sling, an original, early Czech VZ24 style bayonet with the long 12 inch blade that is marked "dot/2716", the metal scabbard and leather frog that is marked on the back "cgn/43".
