Lowenbrau Steha Vintage Wooden Beer Wagon w/Horses
This is a traditional Lowenbrau beer wagon set, made in Western Germany by the toy maker Steha. It is in excellent condition, and the horses and figures come in the original Steha boxes.
This set includes a team of four Clydesdales, a rider and horseman, along with 20 beer barrels.
The wagon is wood, with metal supports, fittings and wheel treads. The Lowenbrau sign is metal, stenciled with the logo. There are metal chains that hook to each horse. The front wheels can turn left or right. The height to the top of the sign is 11 1/2 inches, and the length to the hitch is 27 inches.
The figures are plastic, with jointed arms. Each has a Steha logo imprinted on the back of their vest.
The horses are plastic, fitted in leather harnesses, richly adorned with metal rivets, and green rubber coated felt. The hoofs have wheels. The underside of each horse is marked with a diamond shaped mark that is probably the manufacturer logo, although no names are legible. The horses measure 12 1/2 x 9 inches.
The barrels are all wood, with painted stripes, and all but the small barrels are stamped with the Lowenbrau lion logo on either end. The three keg sizes measure 2 1/2, 3 1/4, and 3 1/2 inches tall.

The entire assembled display is over 4 1/2 feet long.
Some of the boxes show various wear and tears, but a couple are quite nice. All have labels identifying the pieces, and a wonderful box pattern portraying an array of Steha toys.
Steha sold similar horse and wagon sets in the U.S., usually at upscale department stores. This Lowenbrau set was not sold as a toy, and was probably only available to beer distributors and sellers. It would have been an elaborate display in a bar, store, or for an event. This particular set was apparently never displayed. All the pieces were wrapped in paper, and were just unwrapped for photographs.
We don't know its actual age, but it dates back over 50 years.
This a wonderful bit of beer memorabilia that will appeal to toy collectors as well. The Steha construction is top quality. This set is seldom found in such well preserved condition, and the original packaging makes it even more of rare find.
