A poster image comprised of five sheets, each containing a letter from the name of the Davos resort which frames the winter sporting scene shown in each: sleigh riding, skiing, skating and sledding. As it is a continuous image which makes little sense when it is broken up, it’s not clear why–beyond printing press limitations–it was not printed as a single sheet. Mangold gives this panoramic view a pastel treatment, with stylized images drawn in cool colors with contrasting details. Mangold, born in Basel, spent seven years in Munich (1894-1900) where he received grounding in the principles of the popular Jugendstil movement. He became involved with every facet of decorative arts, and after returning to Switzerland in 1900, he practiced many of them, including glassblowing, woodblock printing, illustration, painting and lithography. He produced some 150 posters, choosing his graphic style very carefully for each assigned message. Rare!
