Los Angeles,CA - c1922 - Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Construction Photograph :
A view of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum while under construction, particularly one of the double peristyle arches at the east end of the venue. The photograph measures 9 1/2 x 7 1/2", with white border and no matte or backing. The contrast is high while the focus is good. There are a number of black spots noted, primarily near the top edge of the image. Crease lines are visible on the right top and bottom corners of the border. The image, taken facing the east end of the stadium from the north side, shows construction workers at rest and working. Two sets of track are running around the venue to move supplies, one of which has an automobile riding on steel rims parked on it. The Coliseum opened its doors to Los Angeles in June of 1923, and on October 6,1923, the first football game was played in the stadium by the University of Southern California, with the Coliseum serving as the home field for the University of Southern California since 1923. It is the only facility in the world to play host to two Olympiads (X and XXIII), two Super Bowls (I and VII) and one World Series (1959). Other historic events that have taken place inside the venerable stadium include Major League Baseball, which was played at the Coliseum when the Dodgers of the National League relocated from Brooklyn, New York in 1958. The Dodgers played here until Dodger Stadium was completed in time for the 1962 season. In 1984, the State of California and the United States Government made the Coliseum a State and Federal Historical Landmark. (Ref: lacoliseumlive.com)
