This is a Victorian era officer's helmet for the 1st or 2nd Life Guards. There are gilt floriated bands across the top of the peaks and one running from the rear of the plume base down to the top of the rear peak. The front and rear peaks are decorated with gilt acanthus sprays. The front plate has a large gilt Victorian crown at the top with oak leaf on the right, laurel leaves on the left, a diamond cut silvered star with a gilt oval Garter in the middle having a blue enamel background and a red enamel cross inside the garter. The foliated plume holder has an 8 pointed base and supports a white horsehair plume with a large Tudor rose boss at the top. Two large Tudor rose ear bosses suspend the leather backed chin chain. The peaks are lined with skived leather. The sweat band is a brown silk. There are rubber washers between the plume stem and securing nut.

Condition: Good, the skull and peaks show light pitting with a generally bright appearance. The gilt components are all bright with some scattered minor wear. The leather peak lining is black with patches of green. The silk lining is fair with discoloration, rips and some material is absent.
