with U.S. eagle/heart plate leather martingale, born in 1836, Belgium Vifquain settled in Nebraska in 1857 after completing military training in Brussels, joined the Union Army in 1861, one of three who participated in the failed attempt to kidnap Confederate President Jefferson Davis, Vifquain was appointed to the commanding of the 97th Illinois, at the battle of Ft. Blakely he captured the forts confederate flag earning him a Medal of Honor and later rank of Brigadier General, after the Civil War he served as commander of the 3rd Nebraska Infantry during the Spanish American War which is the period of the picture, Vifquain passed away in 1904 in Lincoln, Nebraska, the martingale is nicely displayed on framed board with facsimile copy of his discharge sheet, 97 Ill, and 2 brass Infantry buttons decorate the bottom, no provenance found in estate establishing this as the example in photo but if found will be forwarded to buyer, includes book written by Jeff Smith "A Frenchman Fights For the Union", great great grandson to Victor Vifquain.
