This fine model is the work of one of the leading sculptors of the 17th century, Francois Girardon. His monument to Louis XIV was erected in 1699 on the Place Vendome in Paris, but was destroyed during the Revolution, in September 1792, with only a few fragments now in the Louvre. It is only through the various surviving models that we can gain some idea of the appearance of the monument. Dressed as a Roman emperor, Louis XIV is seated astride his horse. His hair is full and curly. He wears his royal armor and his cape is set back behind his one shoulder. His armor has details of a "fleur de lef" etched on his ribs and the pleated metal falls down around his waist for extra protection. He holds his royal cane in his hand and points forward suggesting that he is ready to move. His magnificent horse is wild with emotion. The horses mane is flying in the air and the horses nostrils are flared with anxiousness. The mouth is open suggesting the horse is letting out a wild neigh while he rams his hoof in to the ground with excitement. . His nostrils and mouth are highlighted with a gold patina. The contours of the muscles on the horse are amazing with life like detail. Louis the XIV facial expression is surprisingly calm; He is safe and protected in his royal armor. His horse even has a beautiful detailed saddle as well as hair tie for his tail. Classical reminiscences and the idealization characteristic of the academic schools are combined with exaggerated solemnity and a glorification of the man who was known as the 'Sun King'. This beautiful heavy bronze sculpture is signed by the artist Girardon, it is 100% handmade and is mounted on a black marble base and was casted using the Lost Wax Method Below you will find information about the artist. Franois Girardon (March 17, 1628-September 1, 1715) was a French sculptor. He was born at Troyes. As a boy he had for master a joiner and wood-carver of his native town, named Baudesson, under whom he is said to have worked at the chateau of Liebault, where he attracted the notice of Chancellor Sguier. By the chancellor's influence Girardon was first removed to Paris and placed in the studio of Franois Anguier, and afterwards sent to Rome. In 1699 he completed the bronze equestrian statue of Louis XIV, erected by the town of Paris on the Place Louis le Grand. This statue was melted down during the French Revolution, and is known to us only by a small bronze model (Louvre) finished by Girardon himself. His Tomb of Richelieu (church of the Sorbonne) was saved from destruction by Alexandre Lenoir, who received a bayonet thrust in protecting the head of the cardinal from mutilation. It is a capital example of Girardon's work, and the theatrical pomp of its style is typical of the funeral sculpture of the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV; but amongst other important specimens yet remaining may also be cited the Tomb of Louvois (St Eustache), that of Bignon, the king's librarian, executed in 1656 (St Nicolas du Chardonneret), and decorative sculptures in the Galerie d'Apollon and Chambre du roi in the Louvre. He died in Paris in 1715. Condition: This sculpture is in perfect condition. Bronze Dimensions with Marble Base:Height 19 1/2" x Width 14" Marble Dimensions: Diameter 14".
