The rapport that Huffman must have developed with his subjects is magnified in this portrait sequence of Mrs. White Elk. The story goes that the Indian woman was greatly intimidated by Huffman's small log cabin studio and camera apparatus when Huffman noticed her attraction to a ring lying on his table.
Sensing that she was about to refuse the opportunity to be photographed, Huffman gave her the ring which immediately changed her demeanor. He then made the three exposures. Mrs. White Elk images are recognized as one of the most intimate and personal portraits taken of a Native American in the 19th century.
It is that “personal connection” in his work that made Huffman one of the great recorders of western history.
