This is an exceptionally rare original authentic Karl Bodmer (Swiss 1809-1893) hand-colored aquatint and engraving heightened with gum Arabic from the atlas which accompanied Prince Maximilien of Wied’s account of his travels into the interior of North American in the early 1830’s. The piece shows a portrait of a Native American Indian Warrior and is marked, “Peint d’apres nat. par Ch. Bodmer. – Imp. De Bougeard – Grave par K. (or H) Prerest – Wahk-Ta-Ge-Li. – Dacota-Krieger. Guerrier Dacota. A Sioux Warrior – Coblenz. Bei J. Holscher – London published by Ackerman & Co. 96 Strand. Jan 1st 1839 – Paris Arthus Bertrand, editeur.” Top left corner marked, “Tab. 8.” The piece shows the pressed in etching engraving area and the aquatint hand-coloring can be seen wonderfully in detail. There were editions in Germany, France and England, with the same atlas, issued in France, used for the various editions, and the captions are in French, German and English, and the imprints of all three publishers. Circa 1841 original. Prince Maximillian zu Wied-Neuwied’s Travels in the Interior of North America.
