This unique sculpture is the result of a collaboration between the artists Sherrie Levine and Joost van Oss. The Steltman chair is one of six sculptures that interpret the designs of Gerrit Reitveld. Reitveld's wooden furniture is transformed by the artists into austere and severely modern sculptures; wood becomes polished metal in the Steltman chair, and colorful chairs become monochrome in other sculptures from the series. "...Levine and van Oss [have] raised critical questions about authenticity, identity, and property, questions central to the relation of reproduction to [the] original."
