Signed book: Tortilla Flat. First edition. NY: Covici Friede, 1935. Hardcover with dustjacket, 5.5 x 8, 316 pages. Boldly signed in fountain pen on the first free end page, “John Steinbeck.” Light foxing and a light block of toning to the signed page, small tear to the first free end page, fragile and nearly complete splitting of the front and back boards along the hinges, foxing to the pages and end paper, and moderate soiling to the boards heavier to the spine, otherwise very good condition. The dustjacket rates fair with moderate soiling, the dustjacket spine missing, edge chipping, and clipped corners. Despite the flaws, Steinbeck’s signature remains bold and unaffected. Stored in a custom-made slipcase, this is a most desirable signed first edition.
