New Hampshire’s second governor (1741–1819), signer of the Constitution, and president pro tempore of the US Senate under George Washington. ALS, one page, 7.5 x 9, March 28, 1811. Letter to Joshua Darling and John Harris, in part: “I have received your letter…in which you recommend a young gentleman by the name of Jackman J. Davis to be admitted into the Military Academy at West Point. I have this day forwarded the recommendation to the Secretary of War, with some observations; I am doubtful whether we shall be successful in this recommendation, as there are many applications for admission into that Academy.” Matted and framed beside an engraved portrait to an overall size of 19 x 12. In fine condition, with several intersecting folds. Contrary to Governor Langdon’s cautionary words, Davis was ultimately admitted to West Point, graduating in 1814.
