Two TLSs, both signed “John J. Pershing,” addressed to Elliot T. Barrows. The first, General of the Armies letterhead, dated August 12, 1921, in part: “We have not yet made material progress in straightening out the National Guard and Reserve forces, but I believe in a short time will have made considerable progress towards arranging for the more careful selection of officers for duty with these organizations, and also for the special training of these officers before they enter on their new duties”; the second letter, personal letterhead, April 13, 1931, in full: “Your letter of April 1st, with reference to my story of the war, is very gratifying. It was read with much interest and pleasure, and in expressing my deep appreciation of your kind expressions regarding the story I should like also to extend to you my hearty congratulations on your own services.” In overall fine condition, with a rusty paperclip impression and blot to the signature of the earlier letter.
