A speedy switch-hitter who hit at least .277 with occasional power for nine straight seasons (1979-87), Jerry Mumphrey was a defensive liability. He played his first full ML season in 1976, and in 1977 he hit .287 with 22 stolen bases as the Cardinals' * centerfielder but also committed nine errors. Jerry was an outfielder who played for the St. Louis Cardinals (1974–79), San Diego Padres (1980), New York Yankees (1981–83), Houston * Astros (1983–85) and the Chicago Cubs (1986–88). Along with San Diego Padres' teammates Gene Richards and Ozzie Smith, he was part of the first trio from the same team in MLB history * to each steal 50 or more bases in a season (1980). Mumphrey hit .298 with a career-high 52 stolen bases in 1980, but he led NL outfielders with 11 errors. The ball said "To Jerry, Best Regards" with his signature and his number below it in black pen.
