ALS as first lady, signed “J. M. Pierce,” four pages on two adjoining sheets, 4.25 x 7.25, November 10, 1853. Letter to her niece Anne. In part: “I know it must be with you—and then how true, as you say, that every hour and moment, every circumstance and place, is suggestive of the past in connection with the precious one we have loved and lost—stricken, afflicted, bereaved, desolate we are indeed dear Anne—and how utterly empty seems the satisfaction of earth without the beloved ones who made a part of every one of them—Your uncle came into my room a few minutes since, looking sad and oppressed with the sense of his own sorrow and the blank in all things where before there was an object to be interested in…to me Andover is bitterly sad, and thoughts connected with it agonizing.” In fine condition, with one small edge separation repaired with toned tape. Originally purchased from Walter R. Benjamin. The Pierce family was still grieving over the loss of their son Benjamin, who was killed in a train accident in Andover, Massachusetts, two months before Franklin Pierce’s inauguration as president.
