ALS signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page, 5 x 8, October 21, 1873. Letter to the Hon. John Peter Robison, in full: "I have just returned home, from Washington, where I went on election day to argue a case in the Supreme Court—I went from there to N.Y. & have seen many prominent businessmen, in reference to the financial situation. I must go this evening to Salem, to see my sisters, but I will to go & see you before the week ends, if possible. The election will not draw tears from all eyes—& is not with out some compensation." In fine condition. In mentioning the "financial situation," Garfield references the 'Panic of 1873,' a worldwide economic crisis that triggered a depression lasting through the end of the decade. Superb content from the future president while serving as one of Ohio's congressmen.
