Rare partly-printed DS as president, one page, 14.75 x 18.25, March 22, 1881. President Garfield appoints Edward L. Amory as “a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy.” Neatly signed at the conclusion in full by President Garfield and countersigned by Secretary of the Navy William H. Hunt. The blue seal affixed at the bottom remains fully intact. Permanently affixed to a cardstock backing and professionally cleaned, with smoothed intersecting folds, light scattered toning, and evenly trimmed edges, otherwise fine condition. This naval commission dates to just three weeks into Garfield’s presidency, which came to a tragic halt after he was shot in July. Given his brief tenure, any presidential document issued by Garfield is rare and highly sought-after.
