Holland & Holland royal-grade black-powder double-rifle. .500 Express caliber, serial #12314, showing old repair to wrist and owner’s plaque inscribed “Boyd Alexander” with factory letter confirming ownership bythis famous explorer. Alexander was a British Army officer and Ornithologist. He was son of Lt. Col. Boyd Francis Alexander and was a member of the expedition that traveled across Africa from the Niger to the Nile. His bookFrom the Niger to the Nile was published in 1907. He was awarded a gold medal of the Royal Geographic Society for his three-year journey across Africa. He died on one of his expeditions in the French Congo where he waskilled by natives. The rifle remains in good condition showing a blue-brown patina on the barrel, some even losses at the edges from carry and use. The rifle shows three blade sights and a pop-up front sight for nightshooting. The rib is mounted with old claw mounts for removable scope. The action is tightly engraved and shows removable sideplates, bolstered lock, and best quality for its period of manufacture. The stock was
